📷 Updates from Yellowstone with the Northern Lights! 😶‍🌫️ 🌌

Hello everyone!

Greetings from Yellowstone National Park!

David and I hope this newsletter finds you well and planning your autumn photography adventures!

We just finished teaching our Yellowstone night photography workshop and had a great group! Despite having clouds a few nights, we encountered some dynamic weather conditions, including photographing a lightning storm over an erupting Old Faithful. Everyone kept an open mind, and despite the weather, we had fun photographing our way across Yellowstone at night.

One of the highlights of the past few weeks has been photographing and witnessing the Aurora. Due to the sun's increased solar activity, we've had quite a few opportunities to photograph and see the northern lights with our naked eyes at night. I (Jennifer) have never had the opportunity to see or photograph them before, so combining that with my favorite geothermal landscapes, it was an event I won't soon forget! It was magical, and we're so grateful we finally had an opportunity to see it unfold.

We start teaching our small scenes workshop in a few days, and we're looking forward to teaching our favorite genre of photography in this enchanting and magical park. We're excited to introduce our students to the magic of Yellowstone, and we're looking forward to this workshop being that the sole focus is smaller scenes. We will head home after the workshop, where we'll prepare to hit the road for the next two and a half months. During that time, we'll teach four workshops and teach at both Out of Oregon conferences. Our travels will take us from Colorado to Oregon, to Utah, and then Death Valley.

We're looking forward to Oregon and teaching with Out of Chicago again, alongside our friends and colleagues. We're excited to see a new landscape and to have the opportunity to photograph the tide pools. I (Jennifer) just purchased an underwater housing that I look forward to using in the tide pools to indulge my inner marine biologist.

And finally, a big THANK YOU to everyone who bought our monograph book, "Reverence: Death Valley." The support and interest truly humble us, and we have been grateful for all the messages we've received about how the book resonates. We still have a few copies left; get them while you can!

We'll be arriving back home in Colorado just in time for the start of fall colors season! Speaking of fall colors, we recently had a previously filled spot on our Colorado fall colors workshop open up, so if you're interested in joining us, it's not too late! Scroll below for more info.

Until next month, happy photographing!

Jennifer and David

Workshop Openings

Colorado Fall Colors - September 28 thru October 2nd, 2022

We have a last-minute opening for our very popular workshop that is coming up quickly! This will not last long; act fast before it's gone! Learn more...

Zion Narrows - October 31st thru November 3, 2022

The Narrows is an incredible experience, and a canyon that you will never forget. One day is not enough time to photograph all the Narrows offers, so we spend two days exploring this phenomenal slot canyon in Zion National Park. Because of the extensive time we've spent photographing and exploring the narrows over many years, we have the timing of the elusive glow down pat so that you can see and photograph the narrows at their best! The price includes all the gear you need (dry pants, canyoneering boots, walking stick) to explore the canyon comfortably. This is your last chance to join us in the Narrows for a while, as we will not be offering this workshop next year. Learn more...

David & Jennifer’s workshops are the best! They are intimately familiar with the locations they choose for their workshops. They are flexible and can tailor the workshop schedule to the group's interests (and changing weather conditions) to maximize your experience. They are (no surprise) great photographers and educators. They are hands-on and always available to make suggestions and answer questions in the field. The classroom instruction is well organized and packed with information. No matter your skill level, you will leave their workshops a much better photographer!! ~Tim

Join us at the Out of Oregon conference

There are still a few spaces left for the second week of Out of Oregonwhere Jennifer and I will be teaching alongside other inspiring photographers. The rugged beauty of the Oregon coast is something we're looking forward to experiencing and these conferences are so much fun and inspiring. We love meeting all the attendees, and the camaraderie is truly genuine. Consider joining us! These events are a great way to learn from many different instructors, and explore the many photographic opportunities the Oregon coast has to offer.

Featured Workshop Student

We recently held our Yellowstone Night Photography Workshop with a great group of talented photographers. We had challenging weather, but we made the best of it!

Here's what one of our favorite clients, Ellen had to say about it:

I am a returning client for all the reasons one might expect. David and Jennifer are committed to teaching and providing each client individualized instruction in a friendly and helpful setting. They are organized and prepared, so the workshop comes off as an effortless experience for the client. Their true expertise was on full display at the Yellowstone at Night workshop when the weather had a mind of its own and clouds rolled in, obscuring the Milky Way. We quickly pivoted to shoot the storm, lightning and all, when it was safe. Rapidly, new locations were obtained, taking advantage of the storm in real-time instead of giving up because things didn't go according to the original plan. We didn't shoot the same ol' cliche Milky Way shots; we got something unique and arguably better! This could never have happened without an intimate knowledge of Yellowstone in the dark and what seemed to me quick thinking on one's feet to make things possible. It's obvious how much they care about giving us the fullest workshop experience, no matter the circumstances. Definitely the best! ~Ellen

And here are some of her images!

Thank you all for your support!

Best,
David and Jennifer

Spring greetings Reader, We missed you last month! February and March were such a whirlwind for us that we had to skip our newsletter, but we’re excited to be back with updates. February saw us return to our winter home in Death Valley, where we led two fantastic workshops. One highlight was taking a group deep into the backcountry via Jeeps, which is always an incredible experience! We were truly humbled to hear from many attendees that it was the single best workshop they had ever attended....

Hello Reader, Just a quick update this month! Jennifer and I recently returned from an incredible Yellowstone Winter trip – easily our favorite workshop of the year. We had a wonderful time with our participants, braving -30 degree temperatures and were rewarded with absolutely beautiful weather (a Yellowstone rarity in winter!). Highlights included a special encounter with the Wapiti wolf pack and, as always, amazing times in the yurts with our fantastic guides. Below is my favorite image...
